Kite by Paula Wilson

Newmarket Kite Symphony exhibition is designed to celebrate an arts and sports community project brought to life by Market Place in collaboration with Palace House Newmarket: National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art.

From May till July 2017, lead artist R.M. Sánchez-Camus (Marcelo), musican and kite specialist Zachary De Santos, and Newmarket artist Paula Wilson, worked with local people designing, making and flying specialised kites. The grand finale  – Newmarket Kite Symphony –  took place on 8 July as part of Newmarket Carnival and Newmarket Music Festival day with the kites taking to the streets and skies of the town and making an impression in everyone’s heart. You may read the full story of the day here.

Pop into Palace House to see the giant kites  hand-made by Newmarket residents. From the Open Day at Palace House local community groups led by Paula designed and decorated these kites inspired by the local landscape, history and collections at the heritage centre.

The kite flying team was led by Marcelo, Zachary, and local kite expert Mike Read. They ran dual kite flying workshops for local residents for two months, teaching them the skills to make kites dance in the skies. The colours of the dual line stunt kites were informed by horse racing colours found in displays at the heritage centre.
