This autumn Brandon stories are coming alive with a variety of art forms. Ferry Tales is a magical celebration of Brandon’s rich heritage of hospitality and of the people who have passed through. Join us for a day of Sunday fun on 18 September and explore local heritage in a fun and interactive way.
Start your day off on the Market Hill watching Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie by Olivier Award nominated Les Enfants Terribles. Each performance will be followed by an interactive heritage trail, where characters from Brandon past will take you along the town High Street and Town Orchard. Take a picnic at the pop-up tea room in the Orchard, join in with print-making activity at Riverside Hotel, or enjoy cake and poetry at Tilly’s Tea Shop. Whatever you do, you are sure to enjoy this day out!
Make sure to find Market Place gazebo on the day and draw your imaginary menagerie creature – enter the best drawing competition and win an ARTY PARTY for you and your friends at your place provided by West Suffolk Arts Centre.
Programme of the day
“Roll up, roll up, for the most mysterious, magical and magnificent experience of your life!” An enormous exotic caravan has suspiciously arrived in town complete with strange characters that entertain, amuse and beguile. Feast your eyes on this wondrous treat for all the family; an extravaganza fit for a king or a pauper! Enter and be entertained by the world’s weirdest wonder emporium!
FREE, please arrive early to secure a better viewing point. 35 minutes duration – immediately followed by the Ferry Tales promenade performance (see below)
- 11am and 2.35pm, Ferry Tales entertaining promenade performance. Starts on Market Hill
Journey through time and folklore to uncover some of Brandon’s most intriguing and exciting stories! Spot ghosts from centuries past, listen to their tales, and start collecting incredible creatures to create your own Ferry Tales menagerie.
FREE, see trail map for likely ghost-spotting locations. 90 minutes duration. Brought to you by Brandon local theatre company Shoestring working with team from Snail Tales.
- 11am – 4pm, Pop Up Tea Room, Storytelling, Face painting, plus craft and nature activities. Town Orchard.
Come and relax in the ‘Woollen’ Town Orchard, where there are some delicious orchard refreshments on offer, listen to some amazing and amusing stories about Brandon, make a pompom flower, or choose one of six specially created face art designs and become a Ferry Tales character. All activities FREE to take part but a small charge will be made for refreshments from the pop up tearoom.

- 11am – 4pm, Printmaking Workshop with Ricki Outis at Riverside Lodge
Learn the basics of this wonderful printmaking technique and make your own decorative item to take home. FREE to take part. Donations welcome. Suggested donation £2 per item.

- 11am – 4pm Poetry Café at Tilly’s Tea Shop
Join us for imaginative spoken word performances and Brandon-inspired poetry readings while enjoying a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake. Sit back and listen or write your own poem and join in! Performances and participation FREE, Tilly’s Tea Shop prices will apply for refreshments.
