The Word Up! Festival – Story by Holly Orridge

Holly Orridge, a member of the Word Up! team, tells her story of the festival. Please find more photos from the finale event on our Flickr here.

Word Up! Festival is now over, from planning, advertising, re-planning, all of the meetings (and biscuits, don’t forget the biscuits!) There was so much hard work that went into it, so many events to co-ordinate and so many people involved. But, what a fantastic festival it was!

My part in the festival was creating posters, advertising through social media, and then on the ‘finale’ St George’s Day, dressing up as 1980’s Kylie Minogue for the whole day, brilliant. All of the work was worth it. There was so much going on throughout the Market Place – Poet in a Panic, Poetry Jukebox, Art Journalling, and so much more!

I thought each of the events were so appropriate for all ages, there was definitely something for everybody. From the 1960’s talks about the history of March, to the ‘Bedtime Stories’. All of the events were well attended and appreciated and so they should have been! We were lucky enough to be joined by fabulous authors, artists, poets, musicians and even the brilliant Bureau of Silly Ideas on the final day. It was fabulous to see the people of March and the surrounding areas come along and support each event that Market Place put on, with the fabulous Word Up team.

Usually I attend Market Place events as a spectator and so this was my first ever time being a part of a team like this and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every second, even when the planning got stressful! It was fantastic to see how everything came together, to give the public a fantastic time at whichever event they attended. Market Place is about more people creating and experiencing great art in Fenland and Forest Heath and I can confidently say that they achieved that. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year!
