The Fenland BIG Weekender – Awesome

The weekend of 15-17 July March town saw a range of events taking place in the marquee near Oliver Cromwell Hotel. Over 530 people enjoyed the 1960s music, singing, dancing, and watching 1960s films.

The weekend kicked off with a live music concert by 6Ts, all sold out 2 weeks before the night. The dance floor was full from the first lines of the very first song and it was never empty as everyone danced the night away. Have a look at the photos and videos on our Facebook page to get a feel for it.

We had an amazing time. Really enjoyed it and hope it will be back next year. Fantastic.

On Saturday morning we opened up with Crafts and Gift Fair in the marquee where Uncle Mic entertained family with Punch and Judy, proud mums and dads took part in the Bonniest Baby competition and grandmas were up for Glamorous Granny.

The evening Cabaret Club Mega 60s Show was an absolute revelation – the stage in the marquee saw talented young people from March singing alongside a professional session band. Top hits by the likes of The Beatles, Nina Simone, The Foundations, and Tom Jones were brought to life by homegrown talent in a way that would not leave anyone untouched.

Katherine Nightingale, the project manager, said:

This project gave young artists the opportunity to work with live music and musicians who have worked with huge artists such as Gloria Gaynor, Il Divo, The Supremes and The Drifters all over the world. The results were beyond amazing, every performance was superb and resulted in an evening of high quality music and performance.

The weekend finished with film screenings of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Italian Job in the marquee, where people relaxed after the packed weekend with an ice-cream or a pack of pop-corn.

We ran this project in partnership with CambsTimes, and were supported by many local organizations including the Oliver Cromwell Hotel, Markets and Events Ltd, Panini’s, Greetings shop on High Street. Kate Hall, our project director, said:

Full credit in particular has to go to Katherine (Nightingale) and her 20Twenty staff team, and the lovely volunteers, who all worked so hard, giving back to their community with unpaid time, buckets of enthusiasm and great skill. In addition, everyone else who pitched in, from serving food and drink to shifting equipment, were so helpful and positive, which always makes a hard job easier.

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day and we hope the Fenland BIG Weekender will be back again next year.
